Sue & David’s Kitchen

A calmer, more considered kitchen

Sue and David wanted to transform a kitchen that felt visually busy and lacked the storage and organisation they needed. The existing range cooker was particularly dominant, immediately visible from the entrance, while the layout did not make the best use of the available space.

The new design reorganises the kitchen around the way they actually use it. A soft taupe-green Shaker cabinetry creates a calm, cohesive backdrop, while carefully planned storage keeps everyday appliances and essentials accessible without taking over the worktops.

The result is a kitchen that feels brighter and more open, with better proportions, improved accessibility and a much clearer sense of order.

Where Function Meets Character

A Balanced Cooking Zone

Three generous pan drawers sit beneath the centrally positioned gas hob, creating a strong sense of order and symmetry. The two outer drawers conceal internal cutlery drawers, keeping everyday utensils organised while maintaining the clean lines of the Shaker cabinetry.

Storage Without Visual Clutter

From the integrated boiler housing to the pull-out corner storage, every available area has been considered. Generous, accessible storage keeps everyday essentials close at hand while allowing the main worktops to remain clear.

A Dedicated Coffee Station

A shallow run of cabinetry beside the garden door creates a purposeful home for the coffee machine, with mugs stored directly above. Clever use of the available depth maximises the worktop without making the entrance feel crowded.

A Cohesive Palette

The soft taupe-green cabinetry extends into a lighter, related shade on the walls and ceiling, creating a calm and enveloping backdrop. Brushed steel handles, tap and appliance details introduce a subtle thread of consistency throughout the room.

The existing kitchen came with several details that needed to be worked with rather than worked around. The American fridge freezer had to remain beside the entrance because its double doors were the only practical solution around the step into the kitchen. The boiler, positioned close to the window, also needed to be integrated into the cabinetry rather than left exposed.

Rather than allowing these elements to dictate the design, I incorporated them into a more balanced layout. The main run was reorganised around the new central hob, while the tall oven housing creates a clear vertical element next to the American fridge freezer. At the opposite side, shallow cabinetry makes use of the otherwise difficult space beside the garden door.

The result is a kitchen that feels considered from every angle. Existing architectural features and essential appliances have been absorbed into the design, allowing the room to feel calm, spacious and naturally connected.

The shallow area beside the garden door has been transformed into a compact coffee station using extra-tall, shallow wall units. Set on a short plinth, the units create valuable additional worktop space while making full use of the available height. The matching quartz worktop is just 350 mm deep, giving the arrangement the feel of a traditional dresser while providing generous storage above and below. With the coffee machine set on the worktop and mugs stored directly above, this once difficult space has become a practical and characterful part of the kitchen.

The 30 mm quartz worktops give the kitchen a generous, substantial feel. The softly cloudy grain of Savana Quartz adds subtle movement to the pale surface, catching the natural light beautifully and complementing the taupe-green cabinetry. Compared with a 20 mm profile, the extra depth gives the worktops a more grounded and luxurious presence.
